WordPress – Reset Password

In this lesson, we will discuss how we can Change or Reset Password in WordPress. It is often that we forget the password or sometimes we have to change password due to some security reason. WordPress provides an easy way to change or reset the password.

We can recover password in two ways:

1. Using Dashboard
2. Lost Password
3. Using Database
 

1. Using Dashboard

This method is for users who know their password and wants to change Password for some Security reason. Following are the steps to change the password using dashboard:

Step (1) – Log in to the dashboard and hover over Users and click on All Users option.

Step (2) – You will get a list of all users. Select the user whose password is to be changed and click on Edit.

Step (3) – You will get a User edit window. Scroll down and click on Generate Password button.

Step (4) – It will open a drop-down and here you can enter your new password and Click on Update User button.


 

2. Lost Password

This method is for users who forget their password and want to reset the password. Following are the steps to reset the password using Lost Password option:

Step (1) – Go to login window of your WordPress website and click on Lost your password? link.

Step (2) – Enter your e-mail and click on Get New Password button.

Step (3) – A link to your email address has been sent. Open your email and click on the link given.

Step (4) – Enter your new password and click on Reset Password.
 

3. Using Database

You can also reset password using database. We are resetting the password on localhost. You can use the same method to reset the password using cPanel. Following are the steps to reset password using Database:

Step (1) – Type localhost/phpmyadmin in the browser address URL and enter. It will open a window as shown in the below screenshot and click on the database (here is ‘test’) in which your Website installed. Step (2) – It will open a table of all of your website content. Click on wp_users as shown in the screenshot:

Step (3) – It will again open a table of all users present in your database. Locate the user of which password is to be reset and click on Edit link.

Step (4) – In the other tab enter http://www.md5online.org/md5-encrypt.html and enter the new password and click on Encrypt button as shown in the screenshot:

Step (5) – It will generate a unique code and copy the text as shown in the screenshot:

Step (6) – Go to localhost and locate the user_pass table and paste the code as shown in the screenshot:

Step (7) – Click on Go button to reset your password.
